Happy St. Pat's Day to you too Jenny and to everyone else too!!

We don't have anything special planned either. Except to enjoy the day and be happy and healthy. I am going to fix corned beef and cabbage for dinner.

So was it to celebrate St. Pat's day a wee bit early? Did you prepare it or did your lovely wife fix it for the family? My husband is not a big fan of corned beef... but he lets me have it this one day of the year.

My great grandmother on my father's side would be happy to see me celebrate St. Pat's Day. Her name is Etta Elizabeth Flannery... now tell me that isn't a good Irish name?

So how many of us know the legend that became St. Patrick's Day?

Happy Saint Patrick's Day everybody!

My mother's grandmother was an Irishwoman, married to my Scottish greatgrandfather.

I am working, but I am dressed for the day.

I am wearing a dark green silk peasants blouse and a long black skirt, as well a a green heart necklace around my neck and a couple of green emerald rings on my fingers. I always dress up for the day!

I too will have corned beef and cabbage for diner. Yum! I love it!

Top o' the day to ye all!!!!:D :D :D

We are Italian, but eveyone becomes Irish on St. Patrick's Day.
Dinner is cornbeef , potatoes and cabage. Dessert is Lime Jell-o
or Pistachio pudding.

And we have snow again, two days or so just before spring.

Well, it's been a tradition here in the United States, especially with people of Irish descent. Here in America there are many "Irish" pubs. You would probably flip out if you were to see all the party stuff we have available for St.Patty's day here. There are green banners, streamers, green silk carnation boutennaires(sp?), hats (that look like leprechan hats), green bead necklaces, buttons that say "Kiss me I'm Irish", and on amd on and on..... There are also a ton of greeting cards too.

St. Patrick's Day in America has become a day to celebrate your Irish heritage in America. Many many people here have some Irish blood in them. When you ask someone about their ancestry you would be amazed at the number of people who have Irish in them. I know I do! From both sides!

I am bad with dates, but I'm sure most of you have heard about the Great Potato Famine in Ireland in your history books. Many Irishmen fled Ireland to make a new start, try to make a living and not starve to death, and came to America in shiploads. At first the Irish weren't treated well by many of the people in American society..and were treated like second class citizens. But the Irish had heart and were hard workers. They soon established themselves here in America. And they were very good at intermarrying into the local populations. I think that's why almost everyone has a least a hint of Irish in them. The Irish were proud, and I think they turned St. Patrick's Day into a celebration of their Irish heritage.

Nowadays many people claim to be Irish for a day and the day has become a big party day.
The bars and pubs serve green beer, Irish coffee, Black & Tans as well as all varieties of Guinness, and of course drinks made with Bailey's Irish Cream. Everybody likes to celebrate.

I think that corned beef and cabbage was a dish that the Irish had created here and many people have taken a liking to it. I love it myself. So that tradition has stuck.

Biker Betty Boop asked the question about the origins of St. Patrick's Day.

May I go into more history?

St. Patrick was the first missionary from the Roman Empire who set out to bring Christianity to the pagans, in the 5th century. He went to Ireland and worked to bring the word of Christ to the Celtic pagans there. It was said that he performed miracles. Legend has it that he drove all the serpents from Ireland, which of course isn't true in the literal sense. But it rings true from the symbolic sense. The Irish people embraced the new teachings and the country quickly became totally Christian, and very devoted too. This took only 200 years which was very fast as these conversions go. After his death his Irish friends and followers proclaimed St. Patrick to be a saint. Back in those days there wasn't quite the canonization process that there is today, and he was quickly accepted into sainthood for his dedication and hard work. To this day the Irish people are passionate about their Christian faith and they have St. Patrick to thank for that. In those days they didn't honor a person by celebrating his birthday, but by remembering the day he died. So when we celebrate St.Patrick's Day we are honoring Saint Patrick on the day he died, March 17th.

By the way, I'm not that smart...
I watched a television program on The History Channel about St.Patrick on Wednesday while I was working. I didn't get all of the details, but I think I've gotten the basics!;)

So now I give credit to where credit is due!;)

Next year they can celebrate it with a sumptuous corned beef and cabbage dinner, green candles, green beer (or champagne) and finish it off with an Irish coffee...
Say, what would be a great Irish dessert???

Oh, and romantic candlelight put off by the many green candles!:D

I personally prefer Irish coffee to green beer for St. Pat's Day.

Congrats Jenny on your special engagement day!! That was pretty thoughtful on John's part!!
