We are proud to know him through you, Jenny. And I am proud of you too. The wives of the soldiers go through a lot too!

I agree that Jenny is going through a lot emotionally and otherwise. I remember when my first husband was in Viet Nam, I don't think I ever cried or worried so much in my life!!

BikerBetty, I don't know how you (wives) did it when your husband or son, or any family member went off to fight in Vietnam? I would have been A complete basket case worrying constantly especially have the limited communication that you had back then. I admire all the wives and familys of soldiers who fought in all the past wars because there really was no way of knowing how your loved one was doing. The wars of past did not have all the technoligy that the military does this day and age when it comes to communication. I actually consider myself lucky, I get to chat with my hubby through instant message pretty much everyday and I I still get phone calls from him. I went from worrying constantly, lonlyness, sadness to now I am just anxious to get this over with especially knowing that it will be real soon and he will be home. :) BikerBetty again I admire you and respect you too for what you went through, your right this isn't easy. I have A question when you would talk with other people about your husband fighting in Vietnam, did you ever get the feeling that they just didn't get what you were going through and want to give you all this advice thinking they were helping? That's what I get all the time from my friends, I know they mean well but sometimes you just want them to keep quiet. Please ladies and gents here on the board, I didn't mean that towards any of you. I really do appreciate everything you have done on here for me and my hubby. I was just asking BikerBetty A question.:D

My first husband was drafted into the Army and he went willingly but not enthusiastically to Viet Nam in 1969. I know that he was probably scared half to death but was man enough not to admit it to me or anyone else.
Our only form of communication was by writing letters. I wrote him a letter every single day and I worried so much when I didn't hear from him for days or weeks at a time. I also encouraged family and friends to write to him often so that it wasn't just me that he heard from.
When we learned that he was going to Hawaii on R&R, I was thrilled and made plans with my mom, an aunt and his family to all be there in Hawaii with him. Unfortunately, 2 days before he was due to depart for Hawaii, he was seriously wounded and ended up in a hospital for several weeks before he could be transferred to Lettermen General Hospital in San Francisco. Where he spent another 2 years recovering before coming home.
Once he did come home, he was an entirely different person than he was before he left to go to Viet Nam. And after 6 years, our marriage sadly ended.
In answer to your question Jenny, I don't think anyone... except maybe my mother-in-law... knew what I was going through having a husband so far away fighting in a war that didn't make a lot of sense and being so scared and frightened with worry. I think she understood more so than anyone what it felt like because after all she loved her son as much as I loved my husband. It was tragic for both of us when he returned home with missing limbs and so seriously injured that he would never be the same person.
When I see on the news about service men returning home from Iraq with missing arms and legs, it breaks my heart because I know that that person's life will never be the same ... ever again.
It is a huge sacrifice that our military men and women make for other people.. not just this country but other countries and I hope and pray that these brave actions are appreciated.

You're right it is very stressful for the family and it's a great sacrifice and commitment that they make for our countries to have a strong military force.

03-22-2004, 10:28 AM
Yes there is alot of stress on the family's not just on me the wife but my father is very worrried about him and step mom, my mom, sister, and brother-in-law. We have A family support group that get's together once A month and we discuss things and get carepackages together for the soldiers and I have to say it does help getting together with the other wives and families.:)

It's so nice to hear Jenny that you have a strong support group with your family. It makes a lot of difference.
I had some friends visit me from Oregon that I hadn't seen in 17 years and we talked about when her husband was in Viet Nam and then was sent to Germany from Nam and how she really missed him. He was gone the first 3 years of their marriage. I remember it was a difficult time for us. Both our husbands started at Fort Ord and we all went to school together, so I've known her and her husband since we were about 10 years old. I was sure glad to visit with them... brought back lots of memories.

It is very good to have support from family and friends through A tough time like that. I kind of feel bad here I am complaining about John being gone for 1 year to 15 months and your friends husband was gone for 3 years I couldn't even imagine what she was going through. I admire her strength and commitment to her husband that's though, especially with the lack of communication they had back then and the kind of war Vietnam was. Let me just say THANK YOU to you both for your sacrafice that you made.:D

Jenny, it was so long ago and we were both just kids like our husbands. They were both drafted when they were 18 and after their basic training at Ford Ord, CA, they both headed for Nam.
Thankfully Gary wasn't wounded and after his 2 years in Nam, he went on to Germany. His wife was still in high school when they married and so she stayed with her folks until Gary came back home again. They've now been married for 34 years!! And they still act like kids! Ha! They are so cute together!
I lost 15 of my high school friends to the war in Viet Nam... it was sad. Two were women who joined to be nurses.
But I don't really think it matters what war or action it is, it's still a huge sacrifice for family and friends when someone goes away because of his/her commitment to the services.
I'll just be relieved when your husband and friends come back home for good.
