I bet as the VHS becomes more and more outdated, there will be more Betty Boop on DVD. Can you imagine Betty Boop in surround sound??

Hello, I seem to see multi region problems here. I know there are a lot of DVD players that can be hacked into to be made region free, this is legal, it is just a common business practice. I think there are VCRs like this too, but I never looked. The problem is, once you get past the region barrier there are 2 main types of video formats NTSC(US and Japan) and PAL (almost everyelse including the UK) some devices can convert the signals others can't. PAL has a few more frames per second than NTSC and is actually superior so any conversions may affect quality. Now I don't know the rules here about linking to other sites so I won't link unless someone says it is OK, but I will explain where you may be able to find something to help you. At several import video game stores there are devices sold that go in between a game system, DVD player, VCR and the TV that converts the signal. I do not know the quality of these things but google a person named lik-sang and you may find what you need. If lik-sang is out, then just try to find some import specific store regarding games, DVD and VHS.

To clear up some confusion,

There is NO OFFICIALLY AVAILABLE Betty Boop collection on DVD or VHS at this time. There are only unsold and used copies of the authorized Definitive Collection available. Every other tape and DVD on the market is NOT authorized and is mastered from generally crummy public domain copies of the Betty Boop shorts. Buyer beware -- you get what you pay for!

In the 1990s, an authorized set was produced for the US market called Betty Boop: The Definitive Collection and was sold on VHS (individually and in 2 box sets) and later in 2 laserdisc box sets. It contained, at that time, all the known surviving Betty Boop cartoons. Later on, the missing cartoons were found in the hands of private collectors.

The company that had the rights to produce the Betty Boop: Definitive Collection, Artisan, never bothered to port the set over to DVD because by the time time it became viable to do so their concerns were that A) they wouldn't sell enough sets to justify the port-over expense; B) their rights were about to lapse fairly soon so they'd have a short window to sell sets before they'd have to renegotiate the video rights to Betty Boop; and C) no other major home video company was doing box sets/tin sets of classic animated series, either! Remember that it's only been the last 3 years or so that DVD TV box sets have taken off popularity (and lowering prices) and classic animation DVD box sets have only been around the past year or so.

Copies of the Definitive Collection are still circulating, but the set IS out-of-print on both VHS and laserdisc.

Right now, Paramount Pictures OWNS the Betty Boop shorts but are stupidly letting the films sit in a vault and aren't doing anything with them. To get them released, people have to write letters (NOT e-mails; e-mails are easy to fake) to the people in charge of home video at Paramount Pictures, King Features Syndicate, and the existing Fleischer Studios (which is mainly a licensing company and NOT the same company that produced the original Betty Boop shorts).

Ask them why they are NOT releasing Betty Boop on DVD when it's obvious there are a lot of collectors who would pay money for a FINELY restored set(s) of the cartoons and ask them to release it in multiple regions, too! There are Betty Boop fans all across the world and they could sell sets in Europe and Japan as well as in Betty's home, the US!

Appeal to them with the fact that there is a MAJOR adult nostalgia market out there that they could be marketing to. People remember these films from their childhood and want to have them available to see at their leisure in a nice, classy format. They are missing out on an opportunity to make money in this area!

(Yeah, that's right -- appeal to their greed and feed their egos! LOL)

Also ask them to invest in doing a MUCH better job restoring the shorts than they did with the Betty Boop Definitive Collection. The problem with the Definitive Collection is that a cheap restoration/remastering system was used that erased inklines on many of the shorts! Also, the Definitive Collection was really prepared for VHS and LD only and it stands to reason that the cartoons would have to be remastered to get the best quality possible on DVD. Laserdisc and VHS ports to DVD don't look so hot if you didn't know that already...

P.S. -- There are several problems with playing Region 1 VHS and DVD (US/Canadian standard) in other-region players. One, you have to deal with the fact that PAL and NTSC are incompatible video standards so you have to have players capable of playing media that is either PAL or NTSC.

For DVD, the problem is further complicated by the fact of Region lockouts. There's the not-so-inconsequential fact that although Japan and most of Europe are Region 2, the video standards are COMPLETELY different! Japan is NTSC DVD like the US while Europe is PAL-standard.

The other problem you have to consider is the TV set you play videos on. You may VHS/DVD players capable of handling multiple media standards but your TV must also be capable of decoding different types of signals, too! As I understand it, though, there are models of European TV sets capable of decoding both PAL and NTSC signals. You just have to check and see which models handle both signals.

As far as which standard is better video-wise, there are arguments on both sides. One prop for NTSC is the fact that most entertainment is produced for NTSC release and also has the higher framerate. This is especially a big deal with video games when you get into questions of framerate where it's undeniable a higher framerate is preferable. If you really think about it, right now Japan and the US are the biggest producers of mass-entertainment in the world. Not a slam against PAL which has superior resolution, but something to take into consideration.

what a fantastic idea and many thanks for sharing your information. I would love to get the cartoon on DVD. Do you happen to have or know where i could get the mailing address to send such a letter?? Its amazing what public demand can do so if every BB fan + a friend sent a letter maybe they might get the hint.

thanks again for all your help.

Hi everyone,
Just a small note to let fellow Boop fans know about some cartoons on VHS I found. I found several at Wal-Mart for only a dollar!!! I also bought my daughter a "generic" Cinderella video from Wal-Mart for just a dollar and when she started watching it Betty Boop was actually playing Cinderella. I had never seen it before. The box of the video didn't even have Betty anywhere on it. So I just wanted to share my finds with you guys!!

Hi BBooper... If your friend purchased this item from Universal it must to be licensed because I don't believe a company as big as Universal would legally sell any unlicensed merchandise. Why do you think it is unlicensed?
