I know there are alot of Johnny Depp fans out there. You must check out this movie.
Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp) is a writer who runs into a psychotic stranger (John Turturro) who claims that Rainey stole his story.
Maria Bello ( ex ER - Coyote Ugly - Permanent Midnight and the Cooler ) plays Rainey's ex-wife, Charles S. Dutton plays a Private Eye.
This movie was based on the Steven King Novella Secret Garden Secret Window.

You must check out Butterfly Effect.
Ashton Kutcher plays Evan, a man with the ability to go back in time to change an event in the past. Of course every time you change an event in the past it alters the course of history, Sometimes when you try to fix something you break something else. Amy Smart is great as Ashleigh.

Hey!! This movie (Secret Window) sounds interesting BoopF. I was about to really get into it...especially the way you introduced who was who. Has a great title too!
BoopF...has this movie made it to the video stores already?
I am looking for a movie by Alfred Hitchcock: The Open Window. Anyone know how I can find it?
Boopfan713

You must check out Cold Mountain. Thsi movie was based on the novel by Charles Frazier. Iman, a wounded confederate soldier in the Civil War (Jude Law) , becomes a deserter in order to return to Ada, the woman he loves ( Nicole Kidman ). Renee Zelwegger plays Rudy, the woman who helps Ada out. Zelwegger won the Oscar for best supporting actress in this movie. We also saw one of my favorites, Natalie Portman in this movie. She plays Sara. Donald Sutherland plays Ada's dad.

DO you know how I can find Alfred Hitchcocks', "The Open Window?
Boopfan713

Hi Neckless. Secret Window is now in all the Video Rental Places. I got to see it free since Hollywood Video in Natick had a Guarantee in Stock policy. They were out of stock so I got to see it free the next day.
You ask about Hitchcock's Open Window. I think you mean Rear Window. That one came out in 1954 and the reviewers generally all give it Five Stars. It is considered among Hitchcock's best, if not his best work.
L B "Jeff" Jeffries ( James Stewart ) is a photographer who is in a wheelchair because of a broken leg. He is naturally curious and uses his powerful lenses to spy on the neighbors in his apartment complex. Each neighbor has a story. When Mrs. Thorwald disappears, Jeffries suspects the husband ( Raymond Burr ) of murder. He enlists the aid of his girlfriend , high society model Lisa ( played by the Grace Kelly before she became Princess Grace of Monaco ) and his nurse Stella ( Thelma Ritter )
You ask where you can get this. I usually get my movies from CD Universe dot com but I am sure you could find it in any video rental store.

I remember that one (Rear Window) BoopF. But this particular movie by the "Master of Suspense", is called either "The Open Window or An Open Window".
Of course I was very...very (hehehe)...very young and don't remember any of the characters.
This movie was one where a man escaped from prison and made his way into a hospital through an open (basement) window. It was a stormy/rainy night.
The phones had been shut off due to the weather and one of the staff persons on duty...decided to bundle up and weather the storm...to get help for a patient who needed oxygen...or something. This lunatic who came in through the open window killed a nurse right away and dressed in her uniform and wig. He looked quite frightening. He pulled the plug on what little oxygen supply the patient had left. I don't remember much else...except him standing behind a door in the dark when someone entered the room of another patient and since he had on the wig and uniform of the woman he had killed the person said something to him and his voice was not in disguise. There he is looking like a woman and sounding like a man...it was a movie that I...as a child have never...ever forgotten.
One of Hitchcocks' BEST!

Hi Neckless;
I did the search engine for "Open Window and saw that you are probably looking for an episode of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". I was looking at the Amazon website and reviewers mentioned "Open Window" but several mentioned the episode "An Unlocked Window" One reviewer mentioned that they found a copy of it at Finders Keepers Videos dot com.
I looked at that site and they specialize in older tv shows. I did not see it but there is a button to e-mail them so good luck.

Hi Neckless;
I found it. Go to Finders Keepers Videos dot com. You will see a button marked "Retro TV" You will see a video ( $ 7.99 ) or DVD ($10.00) called "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour - Volume Two" Each volume has two classic episodes ( each an hour long ) The Dark Pool and An Unlocked Window appear on Volume Two.
Let us know when you watch it.

You have got to check out this movie. It is based on the story of The Boxing Manager Jackie Kallen. Meg Ryan stars as manager Jackie Kallen, a woman breaking into an exclusive mens club, the fight business. Omar Epps stars as Luther Shaw, a street punk who is molded into a prize fighter who gets a title shot. Charles S. Dutton is the trainer lured out of retirement to work with Shaw. Tony Shalhoub is shady fight promotor Sam LaRocca and Tim Daly plays sports reporter Gavin Reese.
They took a few liberties with the details. They did not give Jackie a husband or children, they moved the story from Detroit to Cleveland, and Kallen's first fighter was Thomas the Hit Man Hearns, not Shaw.
It is a modern day Rocky.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new Denzel Washington movie. Does anyone know... Is it a remake?
Boopfan713
07-30-2004, 12:18 AM
Hi Biker Betty Boop;
You are correct. The Manchurian Candidate starring Denzel Washington is a remake of the 1962 movie of the same name.
The Director is Jonathan Demme ( Silence of the Lambs, and Philadelphia which also featured Denzel ).
Denzel plays Captain Bennett Marco who along with Raymond Shaw ( Liev Schreiber ) return from the war in Iraq ( The original movie had them return from the war in Korea. Frank Sinatra starred as Marco ) It features Shaw's campaign for the presidency with the handlers telling the candidate/president what to do. ( I guess in the newer version a chip is implanted in his head. The original is the old fashioned brainwashing. I do not think they had that technology in the original version )
In the new version Meryl Streep plays Eleanor Prentiss Shaw the wife of the candidate ( The original version had Angela Lansbury as Mrs Shaw for which she was nominated for an Oscar. )
I am anxious to see the new version but first I want to rent the original.

Shrek is supposed to be one big story, in 4 parts. I agree, the nightmares, and fridays and halloweens aren't original anymore after... 5, 6,7 or more parts...

David Gale ( Kevin Spacey ) was the most outspoken opponent of the death penalty. He is now on death row in Texas, days away from his execution for killing fellow death penalty opponent Constance Harraway ( Laura Linney - Absolute Power ) .
Reporter Bitsy Bloom ( Kate Winsley - Titanic ) is sent for three interviews with David Gale, one on Tuesday, one on Wednesday, and one on Thursday. He is to be executed on Friday.
The story is told through flashbacks as Gale tells his story. Did he do it? If he did not do it will there be time to convince the Governor to call off the execution? ( We see in a flashback a debate between Gale and the Governor on the death penalty.
This movie did not get the attention it deserved. It was directed by Alan Parker.

I see most of the movies on DVD or on Cable TV. ( I try to avoid versions that are edited for television. ) Now most movies make it from the big screen to DVD in three months so you can save some bucks with a little patience.
Of course there is nothing like seeing it on the big screen. I only see a few on the big screen.

Ya all ever heard of Netflixs? My hubby an I use it, you can pay 22 or so odd dollars and you can have your movies shipped to your mail box with in 3-5 days. We love it they have all new movies and your old all time favorites!!!
Boopfan713
08-11-2004, 06:44 PM
Hi Candles.
The Netflix is a great idea. Since I subscribe to the premium channels I don't rent enough dvd's to make it worth while. It is ideal for those without the fancy cable stations.
Blockbuster Video is now doing the same thing. For about $25 you get a month of unlimited rentals. You take out two dvd's at a time then exchange them for two more after you watch them. I got a notice that they dropped the price to $15. I do not know if this was a free trial or a price to lure alot more people. It would be great for those who pass by Blockbuster on the way home from work. If not then the Netflix might be for you as the mailman is coming to your house anyway.
The sales clerk suggested you might like to try it for one month and watch as many movies as you want. After you have seen the ones you want to most just cancel after the first month.
I love the On Demand feature where you just press a button on your remote control and get your movie. They have pay per view but they have quite a few free movies ( Well the cable bill is quite high. I should say at no additional charge. ) It saves me alot of time and trouble of setting the vcr to tape movies to watch later.

Hi Lilhommie;
I look at the movie websites to check out the director, the names of the actors and the names of the charachters. It is just a way of checking my facts before I put it on the internet. We do not want to get any wrong information out there.

two little Boopers. Both girls. My mom says it is sad that both of them both could point out Betty Boop and say her name by the time they were 18 months old! My oldest one (she is 4) gets really mad if she someone in the store or somewhere with a BB shirt on. She thinks all BB is mommys!!

It is time to revive this great thread.
I saw the original Manchurian Candidate ( 1962 ) because I wanted to see the original before seeing the remake starring Denzel Washington.
This was based on a Richard Condon novel.
Sargeant Raymond Shaw ( Laurence Harvey ) is a war hero in the Korean War in 1952.... Or was he.... He has been brainwashed by the Manchurians. He can be easily manipulated by those who programmed him.
Captain Marco Bennett ( played by Frank Sinatra... yes that Frank Sinatra )
has figured this out and has to stop him.
James Gregory plays Raymond's Stepfather... Senator John Iselin who wants to become president and will go to any length to get it. I knew I had seen this actor before but did not remember where. I looked it up. He was Inspector Frank Luger on the Barney Miller show.
Angela Lansbury plays Mrs. Iselin ( Raymond's Mother ) who does not care what it takes to become the first lady. She was nominated for an Oscar for this performance.
John McGiver plays Senator Thomas Jordan. You will remember the actor but probably won't remember where. I remember seeing him on the Twilight Zone.
Janet Leigh was also in this movie. You probably remember her best from the shower scene in Psycho. You also know her daughter, actress Jamie Lee Curtis.
The remake has Liev Schreiber as Raymond Shaw, Denzel Washington as Bennett Marco, Meryl Streep as Eleanor Prentiss Shaw (Raymond's Mom - I think she is the candidate for President, not the first lady ), and Jon Voight as Senator Thomas Jordan.

The Birds
This movie came out in 1963. It features Tippi Hendren. ( Some of you know her daughter, actress Melanie Griffith )
The scene when you look outside and see the telephone wires filled with birds is quite scary.
This is one of my favorite movies.

My major motion picture debut is hitting the big screen on March 4th. You may have seen the debut of the ad during the Super Bowl yesterday (Alright Patriots - Back to Back Titles - Three in four years)
The movie is "Be Cool" which is based on the novel by Elmore Leonard. It is the sequel to the movie "Get Shorty" This was directed by F. Gary Gray, you may have seen his work in "The Italian Job.
If you recall the first movie, John Travolta plays hit man Chili Palmer who turns to the film industry. He reprises his role, this time he gets into the music industry. Uma Thurman plays Edie a record producer. Chili Palmer finds a upcoming star ( Cuban-American Christina Milian as Linda Moon ) but has to lure her away from the competition ( Harvey Keitel and manager Vince Vaughn ) . The movie also has Danny DeVito who was in Get Shorty, Wrestler "The Rock" as a body guard, Andre 3000 ( Outkast ) , Cedric the Entertainer as a Rap Mogul, and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith.
My role is as a member of the Audience at an Aerosmith concert, Christina Milian joined Steven Tyler and Aerosmith in a duet for the song "Crying". They brought her out for "Crying", played another song, she came out for "Crying" again, another song, then take three of "Crying". We were chosen because Boston is Aerosmith's hometown and we are the biggest fans. By the way, since I am in section eight I am sure that I will be left on the cutting room floor.

Denzel's soon to be ex-wife is a homicide detective and she is getting close to finding the evidence that points to Denzel in the double murder of Denzel's girlfriend and her husband. The drug money that is evidence in a drug case is in his custody is also missing. Is he being framed? He has to prove that he is innocent but he is running..... OUT OF TIME.

I was reminded that today ( Feb 22nd ) is the 25th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice. The 1980 USA Olympic Team beat the Soviet Union at Lake Placid on a goal by captian Mike Eruzione from Winthrop Mass. I am a huge hockey fan and had seen the Boston University team a number of times. Captain Mike Eruzione, Charlestown's Jack O'Callahan, Dave Silk and goalie Jim Craig all played for BU.
The Soviet Union was thought to be invincible. They won the Gold Medal everytime. They had beaten the NHL all stars and had clobbered the US in an exhibition game at Madison Square prior to the Olympics.
The game was not carried Live on Network TV. They were going to show highlights. When Eruzione scored midway through the third period the US had to hold on. When the USA beat the Soviet Union everyone in the country jumped on the bandwagon. They still had another game to play. The USA would play Finland on Sunday Morning. Everyone in the country it seems was tuning in to this. You can all recall Al Michael's Line as the clocked ticked down.... " Do You Believe in Miracles?..... YES! "
You will all recall Jim Craig looking for his dad with the US flag draped around his shoulders.
This feat would be impossible to top since the Olympics now allow NHL stars to participate. There is no longer a Soviet Union Dynasty. The top Russian players are now playing in the NHL ( well not this season ) and the Soviet Union has broken into several republics.
Kurt Russell does a great job in the movie "Miracle" with his portrayal of the late Herb Brooks who coached the 1980 Olympic Team. The hockey players in the movie were put through a training camp to see if they were good hockey player before they could read for a part.
The only actor of note to portray a hockey player was Eddie Cahill who played the part of Goalie Jim Craig. ( You may remember him as "Tad" from "Friends" When Rachel hired him as her an assistant, not because he was qualified but because she thought he was hot.
In another casting role Buzz Schneider was played by his son.

Ooops. I forgot to mention... Eddie Cahill can now be seen on CSI New York. He was the only actor exempt from hockey try outs because goalies do not have to be great skaters. He had already gotten the part, they did give him lessons and he learned to get in front of the shots.

I have heard some great reviews from the movie "Sin City"
Ebert and Roeper gave it two big thumbs up. Joyce Kulhawik raved about it.
It is based on a graphic novel ( like a big comic book )
They filmed the movie in front of a blue screen ( or is it green ) and digitally added all the background which, if you compare the scenes with the book, is nearly identical. It is a black and white movie but the parts that have color are spectacular by contrast.
This movie was directed by Robert Rodriguez.
It stars Bruce Willis as Hartigan
Brittany Murphy plays Shellie
Benicio Del Torres plays Jackie Boy, a corrupt cop
Mickey Roarke plays Marv
Jessica Alba play Nancy ( a dancing girl )
Rosario Dawson plays Gail - A working girl
Clive Owen plays Dwight

Fever Pitch is the newest movie by the Farrelly Brothers. They brought us Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, Shallow Hal, Me Myself and Irene, and Shallow Hal.
This film is based on a novel about a soccer fanatic. Being from Rhode Island the Farrelly Brothers had to change it to a Red Sox fanatic.
This movie stars Drew Barrymore, Jimmy Fallon and the World Champion Boston Red Sox ( Woooooooooo Hooooooooooooo )
Every thing was going well when Ben ( a schoolteacher played by Jimmy Fallon ) and Lindsey (a successful businesswoman played by Drew Barrymore), that is until baseball season started.
Lindsey now has to compete with Ben's first love..... The Boston Red Sox.
Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore were fixtures here at Fenway Park as they had the full cooperation of the Red Sox.
Several times Red Sox fans were invited to stick around after the game as extras. Somehow there was more cooperation after a win than after a loss.
All of us Red Sox fan could relate to the clip when Ben is upset that that Lindsey expects him to attend a dinner party with her on Saturday Night. THE RED SOX ARE PLAYING THE YANKEES ON SATURDAY NIGHT!!!!!
They had to reshoot parts of the movie. The Red Sox had not won the World Series since 1918 and since the writers assumed the Red Sox would come close once again....... They had to rewrite the movie with a much happier ending.
Some spoil sports are trying to urge a boycott because Drew and Jimmy were allowed onto the field to celebrate after the Red Sox victory in St Louis on October 27th. We were all there in spirit. They are getting doused with champagne - not by actors - but by the Red Sox players - after the game.
Drew and Jimmy are on the cover of Entertainment Weekly with Johnny Damon on the current issue.
Normally the World Premier for a movie is in Hollywood, maybe New York. On Thursday the World Premier will be held at the Fenway Cinema a block from Fenway Park.
Ebert and Roeper give this movie two thumbs up.

Bewitched will be in Theatres June 24th.
This movie is directed by Nora Ephron ( Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, both of these movies feature Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. )

Michael Caine plays Isabel's father Nigel ( who is a warlock ) who falls for Iris Smithson, the actress who plays Samantha's Mom Endora ( Shirley McLaine ).
Nigel gets them to cast him as Maurice.
Other cast members include
Joan Plowright as Clara
Amy Sedaris plays the Gladys Kravits charachter ( Amy was in the Will Farrell Movie "Elf" )
