Popeye's first introduction to the public was on Jan. 17, 1929 in Thimble Theatre, Elzie Crisler Segar's then 10-year-old comic strip.

Popeye appeared onscreen in a Betty Boop cartoon called 'Popeye the Sailor (7/14/33)'

Is there a Popeye fan club????

Have you ever heard of Tom Hadden? He hosted a Popeye Cartoon series in the 1950's and he drew pictures of Popeye on every show. Last I heard he had his onw radio talk show in L..A..

I still wish they'd make one about Betty..but I want it to be animated and not with live actors......

JennyBoop
03-12-2004, 03:40 PM

There's a girl who imitates betty. Mgchan told us some time ago. And maybe they can do something like a screen test, but then a voice test...

i think they should make an animated film but use the voice from her old cartoons (like on glaidtor when that man died half way through filming they digtaly reconstructed him) well they should do some thing like that for betty.

yes I liked the popeye movie to it was really funny and Robin Williams is the best. The woman that played Olive Oil was the lady that was the wife in the shinning with Jack Nicholson.

Yes a Betty movie would be better animated, because there is no one i can think of that could play her and do justice to her she truely is a one of a kind gal!!!!!

Since we're on the subject of Popeye here... there is a new action packed 3D Popeye animation special coming out called "The Quest for Pappy." Mark Mothersbough, founder of the band "DEVO" wrote some of the music.

It's coming out in DVD and will be broadcast on TV around the holidays (maybe the last week of November).

You can find out more here: http://www.kingfeatures.com/pressrm/rel_137_9_9_2003.htm

Oh great news!! I just read the whole article and it's really cool that they are celebrating Popeye this way!!! I'm sure it will be a fun 3D animated special!! Good job King Features!!

Are you folks going to do anything with the Popeye website? It's also neat that Popeye is involved in NASCAR racing too!!!

Popeye was actually a comic strip character first and Olive Oyl predates him! The strip was called Thimble Theatre by Elzie Seager and he debuted in 1929. The strip focused on Olive Oyl's family and Wimpy was prominent.
