 Hello everyone, I was wondering if you see any similarities betweeen Marilyn Monroe and Betty Boop? Marilyn was the reason I mainly became A fan of Betty because of their similarities. I'm not so much talking look's wise more like personality wise their mannerisims and such. I hope I am making sense with this question.:o

Betty was on the screen before Marilyn. :D
So.. maybe Marilyn copied Betty's mannerisms!

Don't get me started on Marilyn Monroe - I absolutely adore her!
I was watching 'Some like it Hot' on Christmas day. There's just something about her that makes her fascinating to watch. Ok, I'm sounding odd now!
Anyways, although Marilyn and Betty are often associated with each other I think this is mostly due to the pose Betty can be seen doing where her skirt is blown up as Marilyn's did in 'The Seven Year itch'. So I think they copied each other! But hey, they're both brilliant! ;) xx

There is a Marilyn Monroe bag that I keep walking past at my local shopping centre and it's stunning! It's a black and white image of her, and her earrings and her beauty spot have diamonte on them! Cute! BUT THEN.......my best friend got it for christmas!!! Grrr.....(*ponders over evil plan to kidnap bag from friend's room*!) I'm contemplating getting the Audrey Hepburn one instead - its the image where she's looking into Tiffany's - I love that picture. (She's another one of my favorite people!) xx

:D Now you all are talking my language Marilyn Monroe. I just adore this woman. I first started to like Marilyn when I seen Some Like It hot she just mesmerized me, I guess that's where I get the Marilyn and Betty comparrison she has Betty's mannerisims when she sing's "Some Like It Hot". I think when Marilyn first came to hollywood and they were finding A image for Marilyn they thought of Betty Boop. I love Marilyn I have all her movies but three early ones that you can't find, I also have 50 book's on her, 2 Franklin Mint Doll's all sorts of stuff on her. Now if any of you want to read A book about Marilyn read,The Marilyn Monroe Biography by Donald Spoto it's the most factual book out there about her. Sorry for rambling again about Marilyn.

Well, I am also a Marilyn fan as well. I guess the same qualities that draw us to Betty Boop also draw us to Marilyn. They both are at once innocent and very sexy, beautiful in a wholesome girl-next-store way, but also very glamourous..... fragile and strong at the same time....
In today's world it is very hard to find real glamour.... The stars of today try but most of them fall short in my opinion. They try too hard... and glamour should just ooze off a beauty naturally I think.... like it does with Betty Boop and Marilyn Monroe. Also, too many of today's stars rely on shock appeal to gain public interest. In my opinion, that is the wrong way to go about getting attention.
I am fascinated with Marilyn too. I like that she was full figured and still considered sexy and gorgeous. She had a healthy looking beauty. Not like some of the skinny waifs that abound in Hollywood today....
I guess we all long for the glamour and nostalgia of yesteryear.
Don't you just love watching those old movies?:)
Thanks for the reading suggestions BBooper!
Um....
and there are two other women who fascinate me...
I am also fascinated by Elizabeth Taylor and Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis. These are two other beautiful and glamorous women who I greatly admire.:D

Some Like it Hot is one of my fave films ever and I love Marilyn too... there are so many documentaries on tv about her but what I think is sad is that most seem more concerned with how she died than what she achieved in her life. I do think that bbooper got it right that marilyn is the real life version of betty and vice versa. I also love vivien leigh, even though she didn't much like marilyn lol

It's strange cos there don't seem to be the same kind of influential women around now who have the same wow factor that people like Marilyn Monroe had. I mean there are plenty of young women that young girls look up to now, but they're so not in the same league as Marilyn or Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly....need I go on! I wonder if in years to come, people like Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman will have the same kind of profile as all the old silver screen actors and actresses have!
*I'm rambling......

02-09-2004, 02:54 PM
I just want to say thank you all for what you said about Marilyn. Being A HUGE!! fan I really appreciate it. This poor woman get's enough bad talk about her like she was A slut and she was A bad actress, she doesn't need it anymore. She deserves the respect that she is long over do for. Although she did recieve A Golden Globe for Some Like It Hot back in the day. :D Here is what's sad by today's standards Marilyn Monroe would have been considered overweight and not very attractive. They would have made her lose weight. Here the thing though too, they did have her get some plastic surgurey, she had A little bump removed from her nose, her hairline was lifted, and she had some little implant in her chin even back then she wasn't perfect. Which is just sad because she is A beautiful woman. Here is A nice pic of Marilyn, one of my personal faves.:D

That's just gorgeous Jenny! Thanks for sharing!
Yes, and Bexi is right... there aren't really very many sars that have that "Wow factor" that Bexi mentions.
However, Bexi has made an interesting observation....
I am watching Nicole Kidman...
Of all the current starlets I am watching her... she has something... In time maybe she might have that big star glamour appeal of the old time movie stars. Her taste in what she wears is flawless, and she has the most bewitching eyes...and she is always growing and stretching as an actress. Yes, I think she is the one to watch!;)
bexi3
02-10-2004, 05:02 AM
Yes I agree Living Booper! She has that timeless look about her. She quite classic in her style and she is a very good actress. So maybe, just maybe she'll be the one we all remember in years to come.........! x

Well I watched it a while a go and I didn't really understand it! That probably makes me sound really stupid, but I couldn't understand the connection between the women. I get that Julianne Moore was Ed Harris' mother, and I get that it all revolved around 'Mrs Dalloway' by Virginia Wolfe, but I didn't really get why Virginia Wolfe was part of the story! If someone can clear it up for me that'd be great cos I felt a little confused by the end of it! x

:D Now there are A few stars that do have that WOW!! factor. I just adore Cathrine Zeta Jones she's got that old hollywood glamour about her, I just loved her in Chicago. Nicole Kidman well she's just another very classy Lady and A great actress. I have not seen the Hours yet my mom say's it's A great movie though. I also like Renee Zellwager, Drew Barrymore. There are some really great actresses in Hollywood but not A whole lot. I was watching A biography last night on the A&E channel on cable about Jane Mansfield and she was another tragic Hollywood case. They treated like crap also and used her for nothing but her body, that happened alot in Hollywood back in the 40's-50's. They did the same thing to Jane Russel which is A shame because she was A good actress. Oh by the way did you know the actress on Law and Order Special Victims Unit she play's the cop well that is Jane Mansfields daughter. :D

02-10-2004, 11:18 AM
I knew someone would say Catherine Zeta Jones!! She is very beautiful but I think she knows it! I remember when she wasnt the glamourous hollywood actress she is now, and she was just a naturally beautful welsh girl in a tv programme called 'The darling buds of may.' She was so different to how she is now! But I suppose that kind of lifestyle change will change you eventually! Chicago was fab! I love it!
Renee Zellwager is brilliant in 'Bridget Jones'! My friends and I are planning on having a B.Jones night on Saturday (being Valentines day!) It seemed appropriate! haha! x

OH I love Bridgt Jones Diary I had to buy it on DVD. I also read the book which was great. I can't wait until the second Bridgt Jones movie comes out. Is it me or does Renee look better with A little extra weight on her? I think she does.:D
bexi3
02-10-2004, 11:47 AM
Oh absolutely! I don't know why she trued so hard to loose it all after BJ had finished! If you look at her in 'Chicago' shes much much too skinny which makes her a lot less sexy than shes meant to be! Catherine Zeta Jones is a lot curvier and much sexier because of it! I saw Renee on the Golden Globe awards and she looks like she's put weight on again (probably for the film) and she looked lovely! I really hope she doesn't go on a mad diet again! Someone should have words with her! x

I've got a friend ( male) who is 5' nothing and he has a 5'9" wife. They are very happily married going on 21 years. It's just that most women I've met like taller men. ( I'm 6'2 1/2" blonde, Blue eyes 220 lbs)( sorry my metric conversion isn't good enough to translate that. But I'll tell you that most of the short men that I know ( that have good personalities and a sense of humor) have no problem getting dates or finding lifelong mates :) height doesn't mean a thing if you have a sense of humor and a personality to match. It does help if you know how to treat a lady though :D

Well, I hope that I didn't offend anyone here. Gee! I think Tom is cute...and other shorter men too. And Aminal definately has a point about the importance of a man to be able to treat his woman right.
Tall men are just my cup of tea, that's all. And I like them blond and blue-eyed too. And not too thin either. But that doesn't mean my eyes don't bug out for a short handsome dark haired cutie!
I am 5'5" and have always been fleshy, even at my thinnest. When I am in shape I am muscular. So I think that I like taller men because it makes me feel smaller...
But I must admit that about 12 years ago I was madly in love with a guy who was 5'7" with brown hair and golden brown eyes. It took me a long time to get over him. Unfortunately, he had a wandering eye....

A teacher once told me that the last time he saw a hole as big as my mouth, he drove his car through it! (It was my first day of school - he had me sussed from the start apparently!) x
they both have that classy yet snfullness about them :P i thinkt hats why they are so appealing to girls, they are able to be ladys and be devilish at the same time without being critisised for it :)

I am a good listener... perfect strangers often open up to me... I go on and on if I am passionate about a subject, but many times I end up being the listener and saying "Uh huh" and "Really?" and "You're right..." or "Noooo..."
When you and I get together Bexi, I know that you'll be doing most of the talking!;)

Nah! The USA is so huge and up until now I've led a sheltered life. I know California, north and south, and I know a little of Washington state, and I've passed through Oregon. I have recently visited Arizona and Nevada. I have NEVER been to the midwest or the east coast, with the exception that I had a layover in Chicago on my way to Italy about 8 years ago and visited the city for a couple of hours. I will probably get to see New York soon because that is where Don is from.

Ok...Pancake day......
Basically the Tuesday before lent starts (the run up to easter) is called Shrove Tuesday. It's the day before Jesus went into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. Whilst he was in the wilderness he was tempted by the devil. That's why people give things up for lent - something that they can be tempted by. They give it up for the same amount of time that Jesus resisted temptation. So pancake day was for people to get rid of spare ingredients in there houses in preparation of lent. Pancakes are made from ingredients that most people have in their cupboards - so they are a symbol of getting rid of these things before giving them up for 40 days and 40 nights. And that, my friends is why we have a pancake day!
Not the clearest of explinations, but I understand what I mean! Hope I cleared it up for you!

02-23-2004, 09:13 AM

Bexi and Jenny have the same birthday? April 10th?
Dancing on the tables sounds like something really fun but could be hazardous if you're unsteady. I saw someone do that on America's Funniest Videos and the table gave way beneath him... everyone laughed but he could've been seriously hurt.
I guess that means you have to be pretty wild and crazy to dance on a table?
livingbooper
02-25-2004, 03:27 PM
Well, you could dance like you have to at a concert... keeping feet in place (for stability) and just boogying with the hips, arms and shoulders!;) Lift those feet much and you're asking for a tumble!;)

Hi Jenny... there is lots of Betty Boop stuff for the bathroom... Vandor, NJ Croce and Bright Ideas to name a few all make items for the bathroom... there's shower curtains, rugs, toothbrush holders, bath soap holders and dispensers....
You can do it in Betty Boop roses, hearts, angel or devil ... oh and I just redid mine in the new checker pattern by Bright Ideas... and yes, we do have Betty bath items... we did just discontinue the old Bright Ideas bath items and just have their new items available. The old stuff has been around for a few years and just wasn't selling as well anymore.
I have both my bathrooms done in Betty and my husband says he doesn't mind.. but he's so used to Betty he loves her as much as I do now.
I'll bet Maria and John also have their bathrooms in Betty too.
Oh and if you decide you want to do your bath and you find stuff from us, I'll make sure you get a discount.

This happened when I was in high school 16 years ago, I went to the movies with my DAD and stepmom, and this guy I had A crush on worked at the concession stand. My dad knew I had this crush on this guy from school but didn't know who. Well dummy me told him that's who I had the crush on. Well that was A big mistake he turned around and pointed to the guy talking very loudly "Gee is that that Sean guy you have A crush on?" Luckly this Sean guy was very nice he just smiled at me and waved. I was never so embarressed in my life:o I have not gone to the movies with my dad since.:o :o

Hey, seeing that this is the Marilyn and Betty thread, and we had previously discussed how glamourous Marilyn was and how we longed for the glamour of old Hollywood...
Did anyone watch the OSCARS????
This year was awesome! There was so much glamour! I loved it! Most all the actresses dressed to the teeth and they were all so lovely and perfectly glamorous like old Hollywood. I loved it. It was so nice seeing the stars embracing old time beauty and glamour and not stooping to shock and sleaze. If Marilyn walked onto the stage right then she would have fit right in!!!!
Gotta love it!
Of course, Betty Boop would have also been perfectly at home...;)

Hey everyone sorry to read about the embarrassing moments from our past... I think we all have them.
I thought the Oscar ceremony was cool this year. Good entertainment and you're right livingbooper the women reminded me of the glamour days of the 40's and 50's!! Weren't they all beautiful? (well except for one or two) but most everyone looked like a movie star!!
I was happy with the choices too.

Yes, me too. It's funny, some years I am just not impressed and the stars look like they are trying to make a statement or shock...
But this year they really put on a class act I think and they were all gorgeous. I really enjoyed it this year....
Maybe they are finally realizing their roles to their fans...that we fans crave for them to be glamorous and classy somehow....
That it's all part of being in the business.... Goodness knows they make enough money from it, even the radical ones...
But I was very satisfied with the production this year and hope that they keep up the good work!

I thougt Cathrine Zeta Jones looked fabulous as usual she has such class. I thought Renee looked beautiful. It was nice to see everyone so dressed up and classy looking. Even Johnny Depp got A haircut for the show, I just wish he would have won though.:D

Yes, I hope they continue to keep up the class act that they put together this year... maybe they wanted to show the "music industry" that vogue and glamour is in style!!

Yes, Catherine Zeta-Jones looked fabulous. And I absolutely LOVED Rene's dress and look. She looked so good and so classic. I've read articles that downrate her, and my brother didn't think that she was deserving.... but I like Rene Z and I thought that she was fabulous at the Oscars. I think that she'll be around for a long time, and I think that she'll be considered as classic some day. Like Catherine Hepburn. Very believeable, gutsy actress. Not gorgeous like a model but utterly talented and beautiful in her way. To me, she becomes a real person in her roles....

I haven't seen 'Cold Mountain' either - I think it looks a bit depressing even though I've been told it's very good. I'll probably watch it at some point - it has to be good I suppose, to have received so many oscar nominations! xx

That's Bexi's favorite image of her.
One of the presents my mom got me for my birthday was a Betty Boop watch with the Betty-as-Marilyn pose on the face. It's so cute! Bexi will be jealous...hehehehe! It is silver and the band is a thick bracelet with hearts on the links.:D

Oh yes, me too!
The watch came in a pretty pink tin box, and there is also a red rhinestone encrusted heart picture frame with it in the box. It has a picture of Betty Boop in it. I suppose you can replace the picture with one of your own, but I think I'll just keep the picture of Betty!
