Post reply vs quote

I have a question, and I hope this doesn't seem silly to any of you, but what is the difference between posting a reply vs a quote? I feel a little confused when I view something and I don't know if a reply goes straight to that person.....I'm just not sure, if when I respond that I'm doing the right thing.

In general if responding to the original poster (OP), the one who initiated the thread, you can just post your reply. Same if your reply is directly below the poster. You quote when you're responding to a particular post, especially when there are lots of posts by many members. Hope this helps! :)
