that sounds sooooo sweet you'll have to show us pictures please. Here in Australia halloween is really not celebrated. it is becoming a bit more commercial but its no big deal here really. We always have treats ready just in case we get some little spooks knocking on the door.

We're out in the country and haven't ever gotten any trick or treaters since we've lived here. All the country kids here go to their church or schools or community center.

We go to our church for a fall festival. Everyone this year is going to dress as a bible character and we are going to have a hot dog roast and roast marshmellows, paint mini pumpkins and play bible trivia games and have a hay ride. Everyone brings in candy throughout the month and then the Sunday school teachers put it into the kids bags that they have decorated. The kids have a blast. After all its all for the kids.

No, I don't find it funny for the kids to go to church for Halloween. The churches around here don't call it a Halloween celebration, they call it a Harvest Festival or Fall Festival but they celebrate it on Halloween Day so that their kids won't feel left out. I personally think it's a wonderful idea.
Read Mrs. B's post and you'll get the idea of what the churches do.

dont you find it a bit funny...going to a church to celebrate Halloween?
Actually, it used to be a religious holiday in some regions called All Hallows Eve. It had nothing to do with dressing up in costumes, witches, monsters, gouls and things. It had to do with honoring the dead. The pagans celebrated fall because of the fall equinox and it the rite of fall was celebrated to usher in winter. I think that is where the practice of harvesting fall crops like pumpkins started as well as decorating with dried corn stalks.
Our country is a melting post of cultures and somehow we have managed to combine all of these diverse customs into what we know of as Halloween.
Also, and this is very important to set the record straight here, the people who/are were called "witches" practice a religion called Wiccan which a is pagan religion where mother earth and the elements are worshiped. Most "witches" were healers in olden times. When modern society and men took over the practice of medicine they persecuted the "witches". In fact, today's return to holistic medicinal practices and the use of healing herbs harkens back to the practices of the ancient healers. Witches have absolutely NOTHING to do with satanism, which is what the Christians fear.
By the way, I am merely open minded and I study many things. I was brought up Catholic and I consider myself a Christian.

These are fantastic carved pumpkins, Lowell!
A few years ago a carved a piece of art with special knices and carvers. I don't know if I still have them or where I stashed them. I never seem to have enough time to carve like that any more.
The shape of the pumpkin is very important. You'd have to find the perfect pumpkin shape to carve betty Boop.

There is no longer enough time before tomorrow to get the perfect pumpkin and carve it that way so I'll just say enjoy the last day of October 2006.

Tonight I went shopping and bought my candy. I looked at pumpkins but the grocery store I went to didn't have many to choose from. I will try looking again tomorrow.
