We dont rally celebrate Halloween here in Australia, however the commercial side of the festivities are becoming more apparant in the shops over the last couple of years.
I always have some treats ready by the front door just in case some little monsters happen to come knocking :-)

Hi NewBB!! For some dumb reason, I thought Halloween was just something that was celebrated here in the U.S. and it's interesting to see how commercialism spreads into other countries and now you are seeing it in Australia too.
Will you be dressing your little one in a costume for her first celebration?

Decorating for a Halloween party? Be sure and have all you need well in advance so you won't have to hunt around for the most unusual Halloween decor. Shop far ahead of time and look in places like the Internet, where you can find some really great and out of the ordinary home decorations.
http://www.halloweenghoststories.com/ghost.gif
Make party bags for your guests to take home and stuff them full of neat treats. They don't have to be expensive, even kids stuff like spider or bat rings, puzzles, games, pumpkin spice candles, cool Halloween tattoos. Cut circles of orange tissue paper and wrap around to make a pumpkin shape, tie off the top with green ribbon or floral tape. Wah-lah! Little pumpkins! Just draw on faces with a black marker.
Food ideas can be hard to come by, this is a time for unusual recipes! Hunt down gelatin molds that are shaped like a brain, heart or hands and make an interesting centerpiece.
Decorate with a bunch of inexpensive skulls that can double as candy dishes. If the top comes off, just line with aluminum foil inside to keep the candy from falling out.
Ordering over the Internet can be a great way to find a multitude of unusual items for your Halloween party. You can find a great variety of party supplies on many store sites that will add the certain something to your party and have your guests wondering just where you found it all. Just make sure to order from reputable web sites and order with plenty of time for it to get to you before Halloween.

I think everything here in the U.S. is just so commercialized.... they make big deals out of everything because it's all about money!
When I was a kid, it was a big deal to go trick or treating but where I'm at here in the country, we don't get any trick or treaters...most of them go to the schools or church that night... it's safer anyway and more fun for the kids.

It wasn't even talked about here.
Now...kiddies are slowly getting into it. It is NOT on our list of holidays or activities in our planning calendar.

Funny how things from the U.S. are being introduced more and more into other countries... do you think television and movies have anything to do with that or the internet maybe?
Neckless
09-20-2006, 09:25 AM
T'wasn't from America.
Where and when did Halloween customs originate?
The many customs we have today in relation to Halloween have their origins in the religious practices of the Romans and the Druids, therefore dating back many centuries. The Romans worshiped various gods and on October 31, a special feast was held in honor of Pomona, goddess of the fruit trees. Later, the Druids, an ancient order of Celtic priests in Britain, made this feast an even more extensive celebration by also honoring Samhain, lord of the dead. This was normally done on November 1 and it was therefore decided to conveniently honor both Pomona and Samhain on October 31 and November 1.

I went to a haunted house three years ago and will never go back to another one. First let me tell you, I don't like clowns at all! Well there was James in front of me and Wayne in back of me. We were walking through it and some things wer actual people dressed up and some were just fake (I think), anyways, we wnet through this tarp covered door and there was a person sitting in a chair dress as a clown. I thought the thing was fake, I mean I got right up in this clowns face and said " James look this one is fake, well I went to touch the clown to "prove" that it was fake and the clown person jumped up towards me and James hit the floor laughing so I ended up crawling up into Waynes arms that clown scared the fire out of me. They still laugh about it and every year they ask me if I want to go see the clown.

Oh my Mrs. B that sounds like a horror story.
I made the mistake of going to a haunted house with my son when he was about 12 and similar things happened to me. This one had lots of gore and fake blood and screaming and howling and well you get the idea.. dark and frightening as hell! Excuse my lanuage but it was pretty scarey!!! Scared me enough that I will never ever go to another one!!
MrsBoopster
09-28-2006, 10:57 AM

I have however spent thanksgiving once with a family i knew that were from America. It was a great day, can't say much about the pumpkin pie though. To us it is a vegetable and i can't seem to talk my taste buds into thinking its a sweet LOL hahaha
