I thought I would ask, Does anyony have a Thanksgiving Tradition?

We have started to Do like my Grandmother had done for years. We let the kids help plan the dinner meal, then when it comes to making the dessert, they chose what we have and help make it. We all take turns givivg thanks for what we have.

MrsBoopster
09-14-2006, 09:35 AM
mostly baked or grilled when I can eat. I am hypoglycemic. My blood sugar stays low and I have to watch my diet to keep my blood sugar from going low. I am a picky eater. I can't eat meat unless I cook it, and when I see raw meat it sometimes makes me sick to my stomach so I usually end up not eating at all.

Thanksgiving: a Human Universal

Of all the profound gestures of the human heart, thanksgiving is the most communal and the most basic. Its presence creates a universal bond that transcends differences throughout the world.

I found out that I will be making Thanksgiving Dinner this year. I have only cooked a Turkey once before by myself. It was alright but it wasn't as juicy as what my dad makes. Here's my suggestion for a juicy turkey.. use a cooking bag.. It cooks the turkey faster... and keeps the juices inside the bag instead of drying it out.

You'll do fine with your dinner planning and the meal will be a success.. just don't stress about it.

Sounds like you're going to have a family dinner this year and that will be better than going out to eat. Good for you! I'll be thinking about you and your family on Thanksgiving Day!!

That is most definatley right. I eat so much that I'm miserable for the next couple of days. But man is it worth it.

My husbands family does things kind of cool. All of bring a different dish. If it's a hit it stays on the food list, if it's not it goes away. I've had mostly misses, but that's okay. There a few things that my family likes that no one else really cares for. We usually don't have a "Traditional" Thanksgiving dinner. Oh we have the turkey (usually my brother-in-law after a couple of cocktails, lol) and sometimes the Ham (usually my other brother-in-law). But the side dishes are always different. Its fun that way.

Bikerbettyboop
09-21-2006, 01:46 PM
That does sound neat!! We always have dinner at our house only because it's the biggest one and holds more people! LOL!

But both my mom and my sister cook side dishes too... we always have tons and tons of food and always have left overs through out the whole weekend... that's when we really get creative with leftovers! LOL!!

But it is a great time! I love the holidays and the food and the fun and the family and the great laughs and memories!! And we always talk about those past holidays and how crazy they are.

One favorite memory is a holiday in which my dad decided he was going to make the gravy (at my house) and I was telling him he was doing it all wrong and he told me to get out of the kitchen that he'd do it his way.. well he ended up catching one of my good kitchen towels on fire, set off the smoke alarm and had us all in hysterics.. We all were laughing so hard once we got the kitchen towel into the sink and water pouring on it.. dad got really mad and told me again to get out of the kitchen and I told him to get out cause it was my kitchen so he stormed out of the kitchen and then we all roared with laughter.. it was funny.. one of those times when you had to be there to appreciate it! Ah.. a fond memory of my dad... and his gravy was terrible.. lumpy.. to oily.. tooooo salty!! But we all still laugh and remember it cause dad isn't here to defend himself!!

boy .. what memories...

Oh and heres another one... we were cutting the pumpkin pie and I grabbed a can of whipped cream and shook the daylights out of it to make it fluffy and the danged end snapped off of it and I ended up spraying whipped cream everywhere! It was hilarious! It went on the ceiling, the walls, the floor, the counter tops.. it was like an explosion and all my sister could do was laugh and I was screaming and hollaring "what do I do.. what do I do" and everyone was busting out laughing. I finally threw the exploding can out the back door and it shot whipped cream everywhere!

Oh man.. those were the days! LOL!!

Thank goodness those aren't our traditions! LOL!

That's a wonderful idea!!! My son has an annual Christmas party and he puts boxes by the front door and on the invitation, he asks his guest to bring non perishable food items and toys that he takes to the food bank and Toys For Tots. He says it's their admission to get into his party.

I remember he started collecting canned goods for the food bank when he was just a kid and he'll be 36 next month.. so those traditions do carry on into adult life.

I can understand why you wouldn't want to celebrate Thanksgiving. But would your grandpa want you to celebrate. Celebrate his life not his passing. My husband lost his father Dec. 23, (bout 8 years ago) we celebrate Christmas with passion. We talk about things his dad did. etc. I know the holiday can hold a bad memory, but maybe you should try and think of all the great stuff your grandpa did.

Keep a smile on your face, life has a funny way of working out.

My mother had started a tradition a few years ago. When we all got together at her house she brought out a native American "talking stick". I'm not sure what tribe it's from, but it is a beautiful decorated stick with feathers and beads. In the native culture everyone would sit in a circle and then the elders would pass the talking stick around. The person who had the stick was the only one to speak. When he was finished he would pass the stick to the next person who then spoke and so it went around the circle. At Thanksgiving my mother would have us all sit around and take turns giving thanks. Each one of us would give thanks for what we felt thankful for when we had our turn with the stick. It really was a meaningful tradition.

Now that my mother is older and not as energetic as she used to be she doesn't have everyone over to her house anymore. She has Thanksgiving with the family members who still live with her and the rest of us have our own. But I still remember all teh wonderful Thanksgivings at her house.

Thanks, that is a very memorable tradition...and very meaningful. It really made us all stop and think about all of the things we have to be thankful for. And, of course, it is good to remember these things at THANKSGIVING!;)

Wonderful memories Lizzy.. thanks for sharing. I've heard of the talking stick... as you may know we live in Apache, Navajo and Yavapai Indian territory .. and I've heard talk of the talking stick... good tradition.

I have a pinion pine in my yard that was once on the Yavapai Indian Reservation. It was blessed by them before it was planted here at our place. It's doing real well.

That is VERY COOL, BBB! Can you take a picture of it and post it? I'd love to see it, especially since it is a blessed tree.

Yep, I can do that... It took Don and I about 6 hours to dig up this tree and bring it home. It really suffered for the first two years but it's finally starting to grow again.
