Marilyn Monroe sang, "I wanna be loved by you---boop-boop-ee-doop" a la "Betty Boop" in "Some Like it Hot." And now Betty Boop will be serving it hot in San Francisco with the bow of the first Betty Boop Diner, June 8 at 161 Powell Street. It's the first in a hoped-for chain of family type diner sites.
"Betty Boop" is the largest classic cartoon merchandise item in the world with over 400 licensees in 38 countries keeping alive the image of the '30s cartoon character created by Max Fleischer. And, of course, the diner will include a boutique with Betty Boop collectibles and merchandise for sale.
The diner is managed by Man J. Kim, owner of the world-famous Sears Fine Foods and Lori's Diners. Two murals in the diner depict Betty Boop riding a street car and another shows her driving down the curves of Lombard Street. King Features are the merchandising agent for all of the above.
The Fleischer company is headed by President Mark F., son of the late producer-director Dick Fleischer and grandson of founder-creator Max Fleischer. Mark will cut the ribbon at the June 8, 10 ayem diner doings.
And that's only the beginning of a life for "Betty Boop" -- the B'way musical is being readied and the producer is Bill Haber who segued from partnership of CAA to become B'way's wunderkind with credits including "Spamalot."
