Odd.

This is my information about Pudgy and the Lost Kitten (1938).

"Pudgy and the Lost Kitten was directed by Dave Fleischer, produced by Max Fleischer, and animated by Myron Waldman and Lillian Friedman. Adolph Zukor was the Executive Producer.

Betty is preparing a Thanksgiving dinner. A little black kitten chases a fly into the kitchen. Betty leaves, and the kitten makes a mess of the kitchen. Pudgy gets the blame until Betty finds the kitten inside the turkey."

The screenshots in the link seem to show a different story. I don't have the cartoon to check this out. Let's hope that now it is 'found' it will become available.

Well, my copy comes from a 35mm owned by a friend of mine...and he is not going to give it to anyone...so it will remain "lost" to the general public.

By the way, here you have screenshots from another rare Betty Boop cartoons, the Talkartoon "Hide and Seek" featuring the lady-that-looks-like-Betty...

Many thanks DDD!

This short, and also Bimbo in "The Robot," feature a heroine who has definite Betty features but seems out of step with the development of Betty from her French poodle days of Dizzy Dishes to the human and very pretty Betty in Any Rags and Boop-Oop-A-Doop. I don't even think they're out of sequence releases, the animator simply seemed to have different ideas.

There probably is a story behind this. I'm not sure we'll ever find out what it is.

It would be interesting to have a chat with the creators to find out their thinking behind these different "Bettys". Do you think they were still trying to develop her identity at those different points in time?

In the early days (1929 -31) Fleischer Studios had a high turnover of animators. At one point they had only Sears and Natwick, and most of the drawing was being done by in-betweeneers and even inkers.

As a result a lot of different people worked on the talkartoons. Bimbo looks different in every short, right up until The Herring Murder Case (1931) when he finally got to look like the Bimbo we would all recognize.

In The Robot (1932) Bimbo is back to his pre-1931 appearance. Although by 1932, Betty was the main star, she's not even mentioned in the title page. The "pretty girl" in the short looks a lot like Betty - and acts a lot like Betty too - but she's has definite appearance differences (smaller, differently shaped head, more modest clothes). Also by then Betty was fully human. The "Betty" in The Robot has doggie ears under her woollen hat.

I always reckoned that The Robot was released out of sequence - maybe a 1929 short that wasn't released at the time but got pushed out when Betty and Bimbo became box-office draws. However, I had problems with this analysis. The "Betty" in The Robot is a lot more human, and prettier, than the "Betty" in Dizzy Dishes or Barnacle Bill the Sailor. Is she really a 1929 prototype?

When I saw the captures from Hide and Seek I knew I'd been wrong about The Robot. Firstly, Max Fleischer puts his own name on the title page, so Betty and Bimbo don't get a mention. Both the kidnapper and the cop bear a resemblance to the "old" Bimbo. The girl is definitely the "Betty" from The Robot, minus the knitted hat and the doggie ears. Is she an somebody's idea of what Betty Boop ought to look like or a different character altogether?

The animator of Hide and Seek was Roland Crandall. Crandall animated a number of Betty Boop carrtoons and talkartoons that featured the Betty Boop we all know. However, how much actual drawing did he do? At Fleischer Studios the "Animator" frequently acted as Director. Dave Fleischer was a great ideas man, but not much of a Director.

So whose idea was the "alternative" Betty? I don't know. I don't know if anybody knows.

I really get a kick out of the humor in these cartoons! Makes me laugh!!

Did you notice that the face on the mountain resembles Koko?

Saved by a motorcycle!! Hooray...

Did you also notice that the girl doesn't have all of Betty Boop's features but she did end up marrying the dog!?!! LOL!

"Is My Palm Read" isn't a lost cartoon but have many deleted scenes on the colored cartoons like when Betty Boop was a baby taking a bath. It's an absurd that this scene was deleted. She is so sweet as a baby. Here is the complete "Is My Palm Read" that I found on You Tube :

I'm new to the site, so I'm replying to a post over a year old... :)

DDD, tell your friend to be a saint and loan his print to the UCLA film archive, so it will be preserved for the future.

The other three BB toons that the UCLA film archive doesn't have are Honest Love and True, 3/25/38, Buzzy Boop, 7/29/38, and Buzzy Boop At The Concert, 9/16/38. But, I have read that a poor-quality 16mm print of Buzzy Boop has been found. Does anyone know if it is available somewhere?

Kokolossal

can't find an edit button, so I'm replying to myself...

I did some more poking around, and found a link to get the "lost" cartoons. Also, as I should expect, the lost four are well known here... It's a big site, takes a while to go through it!
