At 6 am this morning, I was walking around outside on our land digging up prickly pear cactus when I noticed that my dog had suddenly frozen and was growling. I looked up to see what was causing her such dismay and a few hundred yards away was an elk standing perfectly still just watching us. He was so big! I couldn't believe it. It's the first one I've seen.

When my dog barked, the elk was off like a flash... but what a beautiful experience it was for me to see that elk!

It was a great way to start my day!

Quite a few of them here in northern AZ but this is the first one I've seen since I moved here in 1997.. so yes, it was pretty awesome. I think I saw it because I was out doors early this morning.

Yes he was an awesome beast... but not threatening in any way.. just really big!! We see a lot of antelope and deer here but this was the first elk for me. My sis saw a mountain lion (cougar) the other day while riding her horse. Now that would be awesome. She said he was huge. She startled him while he was drinking water from a stream.

Now that would be cool to see as well. I've seen elk all my life, growing up down in Oregon, there was quite a few running around the area. We used hunt for them as well. Don't think dad ever got one, can't remember that far back.

the cougar would be cool though. As long as i was a good distance away and maybe in a car or something just in case it didn't like my scent.

My sis stayed still on her horse til the cougar went on it's way. She's also seen the elk that visits us here... I think the elk is after the hay she has for her horses.

Aren't wild animals amazing? We are fortunate here that we get to see wild animals quite often. Right now all the birds are nesting, including a pair of red tail hawks that have 2 babies in the nest!!

This morning I saw the biggest jack rabbit I've ever seen in my life. He must've been 3 feet tall! He was huge!
