What Betty Boop video tapes and DVDs do you have, and what are currently available?

As far as I am aware, and I hope to be corrected if I am wrong, the Betty Boop Definitive Collection contains over 100 Betty Boop shorts. These are of varying (often poor) quality and currently only playable on NTSC TVs in North America. Some tapes are unavailable.

There are about 20 DVDs including the 25 cartoon "Ultimate Collection," which is fully remastered. However, they are mostly playable only in the US and Canada.

Betty Boop's Hollywood Mystery was released by Rhino Video. This is unavailable new, but can be found second-hand. It is (as far as I know) only in NTSC format.

I'd be pleased to know what everyone here has watched, and whether there is currently anything available that will play in the UK.

I have about 20 cartoons that I've captured through the years. I've converted them to MP4 format, so the quality (especially sound) isn't very good. I use these for research.

Currently, The only DVD available that will play in the UK, is Betty Boop - the ultimate Collection, available from Delta Music (or through Amazon). This is a two DVD set containing 25 cartoons. You can get the two DVDs seperately as Betty Boop's Kerchoo and Betty Boop and Pudgy in We Did It.

Fortunately there isn't a lot of overlap between the DVD and my MP4 files, so I have about 40 cartoons in almost complete form.

I am missing all the early Talkartoons except Minnie the Moocher. I'd love to get hold of Bimbo's Initiation, Mysterious Mose, B*m Bandit, Dizzy Red Riding Hood and Betty Boop M.D.

I would warn that The Ultimate Collection has been censored when it was remastered (or else already censored colourised cartoons have been remastered in black and white).

Most of the cartoons are post-Hays, so the cuts are confined to only a few. Poor Cinderella has lost its colour and its lovely backgrounds. The worst affected is Is My Palm Read where the turtle scene has been lost altogether and Betty has been given a grass skirt to cover her blushes.

IMHO this is a pity. There was nothing in any of the original cartoons that could be described as obscene or even risque by today's standards. It is unfortunate that excellent gags, nice animation and overall quality have been sacrificed in order to spare the ultra-sensitive from glimpsing Betty's lingerie.

Bettyboopfan - I have all these Betty Boop fans on the Ultimate Selection, although Is My Palm Read and Poor Cincerella have been heavily cut.

The Cartoon Craze one looks very similar to Betty Boop and the Girls of Mischief. I'd welcome your opinion on the inclusion of Be Human on this DVD. Little Lulu and Little Audry shorts (the final four cartoons) were meant for children under eight, and I really don't think Be Human is in the same category.

Boop-Oop-a-DoopGirl - the problem isn't so much getting DVDs, it's getting DVDs that will play outside North America. I hope yours are OK. Look forward to hearing from you.

Please do Boop-a-DoopGirl. Some DVDs are engineered so they can't play on players that can read multiple zones.

You could probably persuade them to play on a PC using RealPlayer or Windows Media Player. I intend ordering a US DVD to try this out.

Region 1 DVDs are shipped to the UK from the USA or Canada. This can cause problems, as UK Customs and Excise tend to regard all DVDs as obscene and frequently confiscate them.

They won't normally play on UK DVD players and certainly won't display on UK TVs. They are sometimes playable on standalone DVD players, and you can usually play them on your computer.

None of these difficulties are insuperable, but they are a pain. If a region 1 DVD has a short I can't get elsewhere then I'll try to get it.

Does anyone know what shorts are on "Biography: Betty Boop?"

Thanks

I'll let you know Moocher after I get my copy. As of today, Tower Records has still not shipped my copy. It will take 2 days after they ship (priority mail) for me to receive it.
There is a reasonable description of the DVD on the TOWER RECORDS site. Search for Betty Boop under DVDs. They don't call it Biography: Betty Boop in their listings however. They show release date 12/27/2005 (correct) and as 'Special Order' because they haven't received it yet. (The other sites say very little about the DVD).
I hope this helps a little for now.

I did receive the DVD: Biography: Betty Boop this morning. I haven't openned it yet but the cover says the following: First of all the title is shown as Biography BETTY BOOP The Queen of Cartoons.
It presents the story of BB from her first appearance in Dizzy Dishes to her present status as a modern female role model.
Richard Fleischer (son of Max F.) traces the evolution of his father's creation and relates how her style led to the censorship of her films by the Hays office.
Clips shown include her duet with Cab Calloway in Minnie the Moocher. See why Fleischer Studios and BB are credited with revolutionizing the animation industry.
DVD features: Interactive Menus and Scene selection.
Color and B&W. approx. 50 min.

First I must say I truly enjoyed every minute of this DVD. It is marvelously and professionally put together. The quality of video and sound is excellent (and can benefit from a superior player).

Moocher, you are right about no duet with Cab Calloway in Minnie the Moocher BUT there is sort of a duet with Koko with those Calloway movements.

It starts with how the idea began and goes thru the popularity today. It does have clips from the beginning thru all highlights of all the films. It shows the Fleischer brothers at work, a chief animator/inventor with them and an interview with their son Richard. It is narrated from beginning to end quite well.

I had no idea how far ahead the Fleischer Studios were for their time in the film technology used.

It showed how the Hays commission forced the drastic changes in how BB was portrayed which eventually helped drop her popularity. It turns out that BB was meant for adult audiences but because it was shown to general (family) audiences the Hays Commission had it effect. It is mentioned that 'Do you see some similarity with today?' (I do).

The advent of TV resulted in a gigantic resurgance of popularity lasting to today. The DVD shows real people in recent years dressing like BB and shows and mentions the 1000 or so BB products available. THIS SITE (BettyBoop.com) is shown on the DVD cover.

It shows how they had a contest to get the 'voice of BB' and how Mae Questal won. Also shown is the changing appearance of BB, the original star being Bimbo, the development of Koko, and then later pudgy. For awhile pudgy was the star with BB helping.

I enjoyed seeing BB as a redhead (Cinderella) in her short color film life.

The DVD flows beautifully and is a very important part of my collection. By the way, I checked, and it is available direct from A&E (AETV.com) at the regular price. (Search for Betty Boop after clicking to their store).

I realize I may not have given too many fine details. Any questions????

Great info Lowell. This looks like exactly the sort of information a serious researcher would want.

I'm still puzzled by the Minnie the Moocher information. Koko appeared only very briefly in the short. Betty pulls him out of the inkwell when she's writing a note to her parents and he jumps back in. Calloway was a spooky walrus in Minnie the Moocher and didn't morph into Koko (unless there's a cut I haven't seen).

Koko sang in Cab Calloway's voice in Snow White - a superb rendition of the St James Infirmary Blues - but Betty didn't join in. She was in an ice coffin at the time!

I'm certainly anything but an expert on BB like you, Moocher, so, I might be misinterpreting. I might have taken the 'Calloway Spooky Walrus' and thought it was a 'Koko Spooky figure'. It was only shown for about 5 seconds with no mention of which film it was taken out of, by the way.

Oh, and they mentioned the extreme popularity BB took on in Japan and the making of the film 'In a Foreign Language' for Japanese showing'. (It was made in good taste with consideration of the Japanese culture)

It also showed the creation of 'Popeye' to help continue the popularity of BB for Fleischer Studios.

In any case, Biography: Betty Boop 'Queen of the Cartoons' is an extremely well thought out and put together program for anyone seriously interested in the history of BB. For me, the DVD is invalueable, just like the history you wrote in this forum, Moocher. (For which I thank you again)

Betty sings in Japanese in "A Language All My Own." She was exceptionally popular in Japan, and it could be argued that the big-eyed "hentai" cartoon heroines of today were inspired by Betty Boop.

Unfortunately the relationship between Japan and the USA deteriorated in the late 1930s and the Japanese market closed.
