The only wolf I can think of was in Dizzy Red Riding Hood (1931) and he didn't have a name.

Are you maybe thinking of the wolf in Tex Avery's Red Hot Riding Hood (1943)? That was one funny critter! However, Red isn't Betty.

I don't recall that Tex Avery's wolf had a name, although I'm no expert on Avery's cartoons.

Interesting question and answers... I recall a Willy Wolf too but don't remember if he was in a BB cartoon... I don't think so... I agree with you Mooch.

Willy and Wally Wolf starred in Palatini & Cole's "Bad Boys" (2004). That's the only Willy Wolf I know, but I'm no expert on cartoon wolves.

Not all of the ancillary characters had names and if they did, it was not public. However, from what we've been able to find out, many names were trademarked by Fleischer Studios. Willy Wolf was one of them. We've gone through the list and was able to match most of them to the characters that appeared in Betty's cartoons.

Wow that's fantastic information MGCHAN!!! Thanks for sharing that info with us. I have a CD of some of the old cartoon images that was provided to me by King Features a few years ago but I didn't have the right software to open it. Sure wish I did!

Thanks for the info mgchan. It would be totally in character for the Fleischers to copyright character names even if characters were not called by name in cartoons. "Betty Boop" is the perfect example. She had appeared in talkartoons and screen songs for a year before she got called her full name - but I'd be prepared to bet it was copyrighted from day one.

I assume Willy Wolf was in Dizzy Red Riding Hood. I can't recall if there was a wolf in A-Hunting We Will Go or The Old Man of the Mountain.
