Heavenly Choice is pleased to announce the 20th annual Betty Boop Festival scheduled for July 16 and 17, 2005 which will also commemorate Betty Boop's 75th anniversary.
Last year's festival drew over 1,200 Betty Boop fans of all ages, including hundreds of collectors.
When Betty Boop was created in 1930 by Max Fleischer for Paramount Studio's Talkartoons, her character first appeared as a singing French poodle in the cartoon Dizzy Dishes. Originally created as a romantic interest for another cartoon canine, Betty became so popular that her character soon evolved into a human, a coy flapper with her trademark line "boop-boop-a-doop." From 1931 to 1939, Betty starred in over 100 cartoons.
One of the highlights of this year's festival is Richard Fleischer, of Fleischer Studios, new book release, "Out of the Inkwell, The Max Fleischer Story."
On Saturday, 75 young girls ages newborn to five years, will compete in the Baby Betty Boop Look-a-Like contest at noon. The Montebello-Commerce YMCA girls karate and ballet classes will perform at 10:30 followed by the Kim Hilliard Dance Academy at 11:30. "Tattoo Show and Tell" begins at 1:00 p.m.
On Sunday, Betty Boop fans will find collectables, antiques and bargains at the Betty Boop swap meet which begins at 9:00 a.m. Appraiser Linda Kallis will be on hand to appraise vintage Betty Boop collectibles for festival goers, and at 11:00 a.m. the annual collector's club meeting begins with club president, and Heavenly Choice owner, Denise Hagopian showcasing international and antique Betty Boop collectibles.
The festival takes place both days from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Heavenly Choice Plaza, 534 N. Montebello Blvd., Montebello, CA. Take the Pomona Freeway (60) to the Paramount Blvd. exit and go south. Turn right on Montebello Blvd., one mile over the hill. Admission and parking are free. Sponsorships are available.
