It just aggravates me because my brother-in-law is blind and people stare everytime we go out to eat or where ever.

I always whisper to the people that are staring...."just because he can't see you staring doesn't mean I can't". They usually stop then. :D

For me it's:
(1) People who don't wash their hands after visiting the bathroom.
(2) Bigots of any kind...If i don't like someone it's because of their personality.NOT their race,culture,or religion.
(3) Dog owners who don't clean up after their pets. But never let them foul their own lawn.
(4) People who abuse children,in my opinion they are the lowest of the low
(5) The way nobody ever says please and thank you any more.Manners cost nothing and a little civility is always nice.

Is that 5 already  i could gripe all night

If you don't like the thread you do not have to reply. That is just part of common curtosy, you know what I mean. I would of thought that since we talk outside the fourm you would be a bit nicer here than what I know of you. But no worries I have no regret starting the thread....

I have a few pet peeves. I could go on and on but will limit it to five.
1 - Cell Phones when you are at a ballgame, play, movie, etcetera. Silence is Golden. General use of cell phones is annoying too but not nearly as much.
2 - Cell phones used while people are driving. Not just annoying. It is very dangerous. As the bumper sticker says..... Hang up and drive
3 - Aggressive Drivers
4 - The phrase "No Problem" when substituted for "You're Welcome" I found myself using this phrase once but it is still annoying.
5 - The phrase "Very Unique" when used by a professional TV or Radio person. Unique is one of a kind "very" is redundant.
I must admit to saying the letter O as a zero. I saw David Letterman rant about this. O is not a number, O is a letter, Zero is a number. I admitted he was correct and I am trying to change my ways.

bettyboopfan
07-22-2005, 04:24 PM
: What is the meaning and origin of the phrase "pet peeve?"

A "peeve" is something that annoys or irritates you, and since irritation is a highly individual emotion, one's "peeve" mileage may vary from one's neighbor's.

For a word that expresses a universal (one presumes) human emotion, "peeve" is a remarkably recent coinage, first appearing in print as a verb only in 1908 and a noun (the thing that peeves) in 1911. Both "peeves," however, arose as what linguists call "back-formations" of the much older term "peevish," meaning "ill-tempered," that first appeared in the late 14th century. Back-formations, the derivation of a "root" word from a more complex form, are common in English -- the verb "to sculpt," for instance, was formed from the much older word "sculptor."

The precise derivation of "peevish" is uncertain, but it may be related to the Latin "perversus," meaning "reversed, perverse." The original meaning of "peevish" was simply "silly or foolish," but by about 1530 it had acquired the sense of "irritable, ill-tempered or fretful." Surprisingly, it then took several hundred years to develop "peeve" as the word for the irritating agent or action. "Pet peeve," meaning the one thing that annoys you more than anything else, first appeared around 1919. The "pet" (in the sense of "favorite") formulation probably owes its popularity and longevity to its mild perversity ("favorite annoyance" is a bit oxymoronic) as well as its snappy alliteration.

Pet PEeves!! I wonder why it is called that. I might have asked this quessie before.

I can't stand for people to **** their teeth!!

bettyboopfan
02-27-2006, 11:02 AM
I wonder why it is called that. I might have asked this quessie before.

The term originated from the word "peeve". A "peeve," meaning something that is particularly irritating or annoying, is a relatively recent word. Its first printed usage was in 1911. The term is derived, however, from a 14th-century word -- "peevish," meaning ornery or ill-tempered.

The modified term "pet peeve," a uniquely personal irritant, first appeared in print in 1919.
