I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. It's about sites, but not strictly about this site.

I notice that some Betty Boop sites are part of the Betty Boop Web Ring. Does this have any official standing? Am I likely to get more accurate information and approved downloads from such sites?

Thanks.

The Web rings are not official. We're looking into this and may develop an official Betty Boop Web Ring. On our agenda is an Official Betty Boop Fan Site guide which will contain art work for use on fan sites.

Thanks mgchan.

There are many tribute and information sites which are perfectly decent fan sites. It is, however, difficult to determine whether a site is using images by permission or is ripping them off. It would be good if Betty-browsers like myself could be guided towards "OK" sites, either through an official Web Ring, or from a list on this official site.

Some BBSs that I moderate (not Boop related) provide a list of recommended links. In the "Moderators only" section they also hold a list of "bad" sites (not published for obvious reasons). This enables moderators to quickly identify links to less reputable places and deal with them promptly.

Just a suggestion :)

Great suggestions!

We've had many internal discussions over this and believe it's a good idea to have other BB fan sites be part of the "Official" site.

Moochers are walking infomation centre!

Thank you.

Don't believe absolutely everything though. Sometimes I misremember.

For example, I thought a very young, rather chubby, and not as glamorous as usual Betty ran away from home in Boop-Oop-A-Doop. In fact it was Minnie the Moocher! I shoud've known that!!

What worries me is that everyone is forgetting the real Betty Boop, star of over 100 wonderful cartoons in 1931 to early 1934. I don't really count any of the post-Hays stuff - that was a different Betty!

If old-timers like me are forgetting details, and the King Corporation is happy to license pretty images drawn in the 21st Century and ignore the original, then Betty as was - and she was a STAR, will be lost for ever.

Sadly...

King Features Syndicate and Fleischer Studios makes every effort to maintain the integrity, look and use of Betty Boop. There's a lot of rigorous quality control with how her image appears on licensed products, more so today than ever. Licensees are made to submit Betty's image on the final product, over and over, until we're satisfied.

With Web sites, we try to understand that the fans love Betty and thus try to look the other way when it comes to images drawn & used by the fans. It's very hard to police it and to come down on a fan over Betty's "unauthorized" image would make us out to be bullies. Are we really happy about it? No. Are we happy that the fans love Betty? Yes.

Originally I'd prohibited the posting of BB images by the fans on this site. To jump down one's throat because he/she posted a picture of BB, was counter-productive for the forums. It was silly to enforce because the majority of fans wouldn't know if an image is unauthorized or not.

So... I hope you feel better that Betty's image is not going downhill! :)

I never said it was. The drawings of Betty that I see today are generally beautifully drawn. They are a lot more consistent than the 1930s originals. There is obviously very strict quality control.

That's not the point I'm making. I'm saying that the 2000s Betty, lovely though she is, is an image used by the marketing industry. Nothing wrong with that. It preserves the Little Lady in the public eye.

However, in the 1930s Betty was another kind of star, as big in her own way as Mae West or Jean Harlow, and as iconic as Marlyn Monroe would become 20 years later. I would love the world to get to know that Betty again. She wasn't just a looker, the girl could act!

I think it's unfortunate that Betty's lovely image is all most people know of her. Some even think she was created about 10 years ago to sell clothes and dolls. I'd love to see the old cartoons properly remastered, but retained in black and white, and some of the original artworks published.

I think we are losing the spirit of the original.

I know, I've said it before. Sorry to be an old bore hankering after the past.

Thanks Theresa.

My maternal grandfather introduced me to Betty Boop. To use a modern phrase, she wasn't "cool" in my parents' time.

I love the modern Betty. To a fan of 55 for my 59 years, it is fantastic to see the Little Lady staging such a revival.

However, I consider it valuable that today's fans have the opportunity to know where she came from. My Grandad died in 1952. I carry the torch.
