View Full Version : Poll needed for people who want Betty Boop shorts in authorized DVD collection!

Seriously, with all this other junk being advertised, WHY isn't there a poll for people who want to see the ORIGINAL B & W Betty Boop shorts done in a remastered and officially licensed DVD collection?
It's very ironic that I can buy Betty Boop mugs, posters, calendars, and books but I can't get the theatrical shorts (on a nice quality DVD) that made Betty Boop a legend in the first place!
The DVDs that do have Betty Boop shorts on them are of varying quality and are generally low-quality/public domain rubbish that sure doesn't make the Fleischer name look good at all!

Seriously, we need to get contact numbers for the people who control the Betty Boop character and start putting GENTLE pressure to get these shorts in a nice DVD collection that mimicks the Disney Treasures Collections or the Looney Tunes Golden Collection!
It's pathetic that there's NOTHING of the classic Fleischer animated series (Betty Boop, Popeye) out yet in authorized DVD collections yet!
You can get your fix of the silent "Inkwell" animated shorts featuring Ko-Ko the Clown from www.inkwellimagesink.com , but where are the official, authorized Popeye and Betty Boop sets? Are the people who hold the rights to these film collections so dense that they can't see there's a potentially HUGE worldwide market for RESTORED collections of these animated shorts?
Seriously, if the Disney Treasures, Looney Tunes box set, Family Guy, AND Simpsons DVD collections demonstrate anything, it's that there is a HUGE adult nostalgia market for classic cartoon collections!

They must be dense or ignorant towards a loving market. How long must we suffer?

King Features and Flesicher Studios licenses the Betty Boop property. We can approach licensees to place Betty Boop on a product or in this case, suggest a Betty Boop DVD, but it's up to the licensees to come out with the product.
There is a possibility the Definitive Collection will come out in DVD format. Whether it'll be of a higher quality remains to be seen.
Since you mentioned Popeye, there is an all new 3D animated special coming out this holiday season. It's fantastic and captures the old Popeye 100%.
One of the major studios is working on digitizing, cleaning up and restoring the original colors on old Popeye cartoons, which will be out in DVDs! I've seen it and the details that it brings out are amazing.

From what I see Popeye #D has Popeye and Bluto as best buds and they explore relation issues with olive, it goes against the fun and wackyness of the originsl turning it into some lame family friendly mad about you wanna be, urggh.

Popeye in 3 D will be great! I love Popeye and the whole cast of characters. Hopefully Betty Boop will soon follow suit!!

Artisan Entertainment has been licensed the video rights since 1998, and has done very little with the Betty Boop cartoons, or even the other Fleischer cartoons they were allowed to release to video. The cartoons will revert to Paramount shortly where it is more likely they will get a proper video release - I'm not sure how up-to-date this information is, Paramount may already own the cartoon rights.
I have nothing but admiration for the way King Features has preserved the integrity of the Betty Boop image while still allowing images to be used for non-profit-making purposes. It is a pity that the same protection hasn't been given to the cartoons, which were butchered in the 1970s when they were colourised. Many of the original black and white cartoons have been lost or allowed to deteriorate. None of this is King Features' fault, as they had rights only to the image and character, not to the animations (as I understand it).
If King Features can put pressure on whoever own the video rights, then fans everywhere will applaud. UCLA has been busy restoring the original nitrates, so good quality black and white cartoons should be available.
I would welcome a high quality "definitive collection" on DVD, particularly if it can be used with players and TVs outside North America. The videotapes are mostly poor quality and NTSC only - if they are available at all.

Mooch > You hit the nail on the head! We have no control over the cartoons that are out in public domain or that we don't have rights to.

I missed the reference. I really was tired last night.
Bimbo's Initiation (1931). What was the name of the secret society?
I've forgotten, and I can't find it!
